Visiting A Township
http://www.joburg.org.za/soweto/

There have been so many moments so far on this trip where I realize how great I have it. How lucky I am. At the same time those moments have enabled to learn how much I have to learn and how sheltered a life I have lived.

Visiting a Township for me was amazing. Soweto is a place again I am finding it so hard to describe. It is the place where Nelson Mandela resided and is the largest Black Urban Settlement in the country. It is a place where history started. You see the shacks where people live as well as various squatter camps. Your eyes open and for me my heart was warmed. Driving through it with four other white Tourists was an experience. The stares. More then anything what I will take away from this was beauty of the Human Spirit. I am taking this away from every experience I have here. I loved driving through the town and seeing the smiles and the laughter of the children playing and couples holding hands. That is what I will remember

Hector Peterson Museum

In 1976 there was a Student Upraising against apartheid in what is now called Soweto. This museum was another that showed the struggle of the People of South Africa during a time when the only question you can ask is why?

Finishing The Day

It was also on this day I went to see the Movie Hotel Rwanda. Amazing Movie I recommend it to all.

Sarin's Birthday

Wait a second we did not finish the day with the Movie. But rather a feast as it was the lovely Sarin Proms birthday. Fred cooked and it was great. Though I have to say there is a little tradition here that I love. When its your birthday you get drenched with water. I have a great picture of Sarin being soaked. I am very happy I had my camera with me as she decided then not to use me a shield but Fred instead. Ohhh the memories

Greek Food

There was yet another going away dinner this week on Wednesday and I was super excited to find out it was at a Greek restaurant. I kept thinking Humas Jennifer Humas. Well they had no Humas and I have to say I was a little upset. This intern made me start thinking about food I miss. And ordered a chocolate milkshake.

Chocolate Milk

Bottomless Pop

Ice Cream – they have it here its just to cold to eat it.

Starbucks – mmm Passion Lemonade Ice Tea

Dill Pickle Anything

OK there is more but I am going to stop.

LCPM – Local Committee Presidents Meeting

OK so the reason I am here is AIESEC right. So it would make sense that sooner or later I would have to do some AIESEC work right. Well it came on Thursday of last week. The reason why I was unable to get on my email until today. The presidents from around the country came to start a new beginning in the struggling AIESEC South Africa and it was great to be a part of it. Even if it was with a funny accent :)

Anyways it was four days of learning/planning and seeing potential in a group of amazing individuals. It was also great to be half way around the world and being part of something I am a part of at home. I felt a connection. I also danced in my PJ's which is something I can say I have never done at home.

Friday we went out to a Café called Buzz 9 and it felt like I was sitting someplace on Whyte Avenue. It was a great weekend.

The reality of AIESEC in SA and in Canada are like Day and night. Though there is a bond of the organization which was amazing to feel.

Dancing Like a White Girl

On the Saturday night of the Meeting there was a Braai. Orrr should I say BBQ. No BBq is the spice! Anyways on with this. Well there was dancing. As a white girl I mean I can dance but I felt very out of place here. They have routines. It was amazing. Tons of fun but still I am a white girl.

Though don't worry I did showcase some of my signature moves. The shopping cart went over very well. New Move Learnt: The Christmas Tree.

Overall How is it Going

Good it is going very good. Improving daily. Living with 11 other people from all over the world is a ride and with one bathroom what can I say. I am learning to shower at odd times during the day. Last night we went out for dinner and I felt like I was sitting at home with my friends. I do miss you all but I love the connection I am feeling with the place I am currently calling home.

Again I love to here from home and find out what you all are doing.

Lots of Love,

Jennifer
